Seas Your Future media ambassador Ben Lowings had the opportunity last weekend to visit TS Pelican during her refit in Barrow after he skippered a yacht delivery trip to Cumbria.
Duty Officer in Charge, First Mate Tamsin Lambert, introduced volunteers busy painting and undertaking other refit and upgrade tasks. She discussed the logistics of training voyages with young people, as well as the prospects for school charters and ship visits
Ben also got to see the deck layout and enjoyed discussing Pelican's unique rig. He was fascinated to see photos below which showed how she had once been an Arctic fishing trawler.
Ben said: "I'm excited to help Seas Your Future. Harnessing the power of the wind is what sailing ship crews have learnt to do throughout history. There is nothing to match the magic of driving a large ship over the ocean. A ship is a whole travelling world of learning. There is always something new to find out."
NOTE: Ben Lowings is a yacht delivery skipper and RYA instructor. He writes for UK boating magazines and publishes books through his Serantes Press imprint. (The latest one, "You Can Steer A Tall Ship" is going to need a second edition!)
