TS Pelican of London, the UK-flagged 3-masted class A tall ship, wishes to recruit volunteer deck officers to sail on board. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience, sea time and learn about sailing a square rigged vessel. Working with our young Trainee crew is a great fun experience.
Minimum Qualifications Required:
UK MCA OOW (Deck) Certificate of Competency: “OOW < 500GT (Yachts and Sail Training Vessels)”
Or:
Any UK MCA Unlimited OOW (Deck) Certificate of Competency – Sailing experience is not required
With Current, Valid:
- ENG1 medical fitness certificate
- Basic STCW95 modules as appropriate to CoC
- Passport with expiry April 2025 or later
As we sail with young people, an Enhanced UK DBS check, as well as safeguarding training will be arranged by vessel/company for British Citizens. For overseas applicants, it may be necessary to arrange a “Police Check” with your national authorities instead.
Suitable Applicants:
- Should know that sailing experience is ideal but not essential; as long as you have a willingness to learn whilst on board.
- Should be smartly presented, friendly, approachable and enjoy working with others. We carry inexperienced trainees who will look to all the ship’s officers as role models and will be keen to learn from you if given the opportunity.
Arrangements:
Come and sail on board this beautiful vessel as a supernumerary member of our friendly Professional Crew whilst we visit stunning UK and northern European locations, including many ports less often frequented by commercial vessels. On board training will be provided in traditional seamanship, sail handling and the appropriate bridge procedures for handling vessels under sail. This training will be tailored to suit individual experience levels.
For this supernumerary role we ask that you provide your time on board free of charge, although we will cover reasonable expenses such as travel to and from the vessel. The vessel is manned with 8 professional crew in accordance with the regulations; the 3rd Officer role is in addition to the requirements and provides a great opportunity to gain seatime and experience on a square rigged Sail Training vessel sailing with young Trainees.
For newly-qualified officers this provides the opportunity to develop skills and gain sea time towards further qualifications whilst working with other experienced professional seafarers who take pride in teaching and training others and passing on knowledge. The role of Volunteer Third Mate can be used as a “foot in the door” leading towards paid positions within the Sail Training sector.
Once initial training and assessment is complete, the Third Mate will normally stand all or part of the 0800-1230 and 2000-0000 watches under the general supervision of the Master. Other duties would involve some deck seamanship and supporting the Second Mate with LSA/FFA tasks, but as a volunteer you will also have plenty of time to relax and enjoy your time on board.
