The Pelican is Coming to Barrow THIS Weekend!!

Barrow Town Quay (near Morrisons) will welcome the tall ship Pelican of London in the evening on Friday 5th August with six youngsters and their mentor from the area on board after sailing across from Dublin via the Isle of Man.

The ship will be open to the public for deck visits throughout the day on Saturday 6th August, before welcoming a new group of youngsters on board on Sunday to sail across the Irish Sea back to Dublin.

The ship is owned by the youth development charity Seas Your Future, offering young people sail training, maritime careers and ocean science voyages for personal and character development. The charity was founded in 2008 to support the development of young people, building resilience, self-confidence, and independence.  Pelican of London sails for 46-48 weeks each year with up to 35 young trainees and 12 professional crew.

Over the next few weeks until mid-September up to 40 young people from the Barrow and South Lakeland area will join the ship for voyages of 7-days and 14-days. Over the weekend of 5th-7th August the ship will participate in community activities with local organisers, who are planning the revival of the Barrow Sea Festival next year, when other tall ships as well as the Pelican will visit Barrow again.

Seas Your Future CEO Adrian Ragbourne said: “We are delighted to be sailing intoBarrow for the first time and looking forward to annual visits to Cumbria in future offering sail training to youngsters from the area. We are extremely grateful to several funders who have met the costs to enable these youngsters to sail with us:

  • BAE Systems Marine,
  • AW Ship Management,
  • Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS),
  • the Rotary Club of Furness,
  • Barrow Rotary Club,
  • the George Wood memorial Benevolent Fund.

We are also very grateful to Associated British Ports in Barrow for their support organising the voyages.

We sail regularly in the Irish Sea visiting the Isle of Man with our partners Sail Training Ireland and Ocean College, and we are looking forward to more voyages in future years sailing regularly into Cumbria, having bought a second tall ship in the Spring to respond to excess demand”.
