From Orkney to Shetland - Alun Morgan

Alun Morgan, our Ship’s Writer and Social Impact Researcher, has written a second

blog about his time aboard TS Pelican:

We've had another couple of great days. After leaving Stromness in the Orkneys at 11:00 on Saturday, we sailed through the night to the Shetlands.

The sailing was good - managing up to 6+ knots at times, but we handed the sails and motored at around 4am (a fun job for the watch!). During the sail the science team undertook a variety of wildlife surveys. We also saw a number of pods of white-beaked dolphins breaching and spinning, a minkie whale and harbour porpoises.

On Sunday morning a few of us sea-stowed the T'Gallant sail - an exciting challenge necessitating a trip to yard arm.  When we reached the Shetlands we were treated to more spectacular scenery, and passed the fantastically named Muckle Flugga and Out Stack -  the most northerly point in the UK.

On arrival at Balta Sound at 18:30 several of the more adventurous crew went for a swim off the Pelican - 12 degrees C!!

The voyage of exploration continues!
