Here is a day in the life of Cadet Max Mudd aboard TS Pelican of London, Leg1 of Darwin200 2021.
“Work On- board:
My day got off to an early start with my alarm being set at 3:30am so I could be on the bridge at 4 to do my morning anchor watch. We were anchored off the small island of Lundy in the Bristol Channel. After seeing a spectacular sunrise around 5am, I headed down to the mess for some breakfast and for our morning meeting with the Captain and Chief officer. With most of the voyage crew and scientists heading ashore to explore the island, sadly it was my turn to stay aboard and crack on with the day and the ahead jobs. It was a gorgeous day, 23 ̊, this made doing the monthly planned maintenance greasing and oiling all the more bearable. Next on the cards was mixing some 2-pack primer and painting the prepared surface on fwd mooring.
Down Time:
Once I had completed my tasks for the day, I was allowed a few hours down time. This consisted of a quick dip into the sea from the pilot ladder and then sunbathing on the boat deck. Being in the UK I forgot about sun cream, and I was told I looked like a “squashie”, for those who don’t know, a squashie is a pink and white sweet....to top the day off, in the early evening Pelican was greeted by a pod of dolphins playing in the swell around the boat.
All in all, a successful and enjoyable day!”
